Mystery of Lawlessness – Part Five

Mystery of Lawlessness – Part Five

“But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets” – Daniel interprets a dream

In the previous chapter we saw satan’s first attempt (which failed) to create a one world government through which he could exercise god-like control over mankind.  In this chapter we will look at the prophetic rise and fall of other world empires and get a glimpse at the last world empire that has yet to come.  Of all the old testament prophets, none were given as much insight into the future than Daniel.  Daniel lived around 600BC and during the course of his life he saw the and fall of theBabylonian empire and the rise of the Medio/Persian empire.  WhenNebuchadnezzar conqueredJerusalemin 586BC, Daniel was carried off toBabylonto serve in the King’s court.  When Darius conqueredBabylonin 539BC, Daniel served under King Darius and the under hisPersian successor Cyrus.

The book of Daniel records these events and also includes three different dreams/visions that God gave Daniel regarding future world kingdoms AND EVENTS.   The first revelation came in the interpretation of one ofNebuchadnezzars dreams.  In the verses below, we see where God gave King Nebuchadnezzar a dream, and then gave Daniel the interpretation of that dream. In this dream interpretation God revealed to Daniel specific information regarding the rise and fall of four world empires which have already come and gone… and one last world empire yet to come that will be in place when Jesus Christ returns in the “latter days”.  Lets take a look at those scriptures and then focus on key elements of God’s message to us today.  Keep in mind, the book of Daniel was written by Daniel sometime between 586BC and 530BC.  The prophecies given to him by God have accurately spanned almost 2,600 years and will no doubt conclude in the future exactly according to God’s word!

In the following versesNebuchadnezzar, King ofBabylonhad a dream which he asked hiswise men to tell him what his dream was and then interpret it.  They were unable to do so and in his furyNebuchadnezzar ordered all thewise men ofBabylonto be killed, including Daniel.

Daniel Chapter 2: 24- 47

24 Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.

25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.

26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?

27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;

28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;

29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.

30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.

31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.

32 This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,

Golden head represents the Babylonian Empire

Breast and arms of silver Medio/Persian Empire represents the shared power   between the Medes and the Persians.

Belly and thighs of brass represent the Greek Empire

33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.

Legs of iron representing Eastern and Western Roman Empires

Feet of iron and clay which represents a future world empire.

34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

What do you suppose this stone cut without hands is?  Let us look to the             Psalms written almost 400 years earlier by David for the answer.

          Psalm 118:22

22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

We see more evidence to this effect in Matthew

            Matthew Chapter 21:42

Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the      builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing,    and it is marvellous in our eyes?

            1 Peter 2:6

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner         stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

This “stone” is none other than Jesus, the stone cut without human hands!  This            means that the last world empire will be conquered by none other than Jesus       Himself.

35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.

37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.

38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.

39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.

40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.

Its important to note the progression of metals representing the world empires.              Gold is the most precious of the metals and also the softest.  Silver is less precious           but harder in composition.  Brass is less precious than silver but harder in     nature.  Finally, iron is the least valuable of all the metals, but also the hardest.           In addition to listing the rise and fall of empires, Daniel’s interpretation also      gives insight in the progressive decline in value and increased hardness of the           empires leading up to the final world empire.

41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.

42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

“Part of iron” could indicate the last world empire will be similar in nature to the            previous “iron legs” of the Roman Empire.   “Part of clay” means the final world            empire will be “partly broken”, or “divided” as reflected in verse 41 above.  In           the next verse we get another clue as to what “part of clay” might mean.

43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

“they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men”  We have seen the last world         empire will be partly strong, partly broken, it will be divided and now we see that           a non-human entity “mingles” with the seed of men.  When is the last time we         heard of this type of mingling?

Genesis 6: 2-5

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

Only angels are called “sons of God” in the old testament.  Therefore the           “mingling” referred to in Daniel 2:45 would indicate that the last world empire         will see a repeat of this phenomena.  What was the outcome, the last time this     happened?  See verse 5 below.

And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

God subsequently destroyed the earth and all but 8 of its inhabitants with the     flood as a result of the evil that was propagated by the mingling between angelic forces and the seed of men.

Now back to Daniel 2:44-47

44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

So although we have yet to see the rise of the final empire, we know from these             scriptures that JESUS, the stone cut without human hands, the precious   cornerstone will destroy satan’s last attempt to set up a          world empire that he hoped to rule over as god.

46 Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him.

47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.

Even the heathen King of Babylon was willing to recognize the TRUTH of God’s           presence and power.  Perhaps that’s why he was portrayed as the statues Head of        Gold.  We will see in future messages that leaders of latter  empires were less      willing to concede to God’s authority.

Next week we will look at the other two revelations given to Daniel and the following week begin focusing on the what the bible has to say about the last world empire that is yet to come and the mystery of lawlessness working behind the scenes to bring that about.

May God richly bless you this week as you seek out HIS truths.
