Water Filters

Many of the regions served by The King’s Storehouse have little or no water at all, or what they do have is contaminated with bacteria, parasites and protozoa.  According to the latest statistics, six thousand people die each day around the world just for lack of clean drinking water.  Consequently, providing clean drinking water is one of the key components of our ministry.  Our focus is to fund and manage water projects to provide water where there is none, or provide water filters in regions where the water is contaminated water.  There are many different water filter technologies available on the market today but only one which we have found which meets our specifications.  These specifications were designed to meet the widest range of conditions and demands we expected to encounter from the rain forests of Central and South America, to the barren deserts of Africa.  We decided the filters had to be capable of removing all disease causing bacteria, parasites and protozoa.  They had to be small, light weight and easy to transport.  They had to be very simple to use and simple to maintain.  They had to be extremely reliable and capable of filtering at least 5 gallons of water per hour.  They had to be durable and last a very long time.  Finally, and most importantly, they had to be reasonably priced and readily available.   After experimenting with various designs, we settled on a hollow fiber membrane filtration system that is similar to what is used in kidney dialysis.  The filter is called the Point One Filter (because it filters to the .1 micron level) and is sold by a company out of Florida called Sawyer Products.  We tested the filters against our specifications and here the results:

We sent the filter to an independant testing laboratory which confirmed the system consistently filters to the .1 micron level removing all bacteria, parasites and protozoa which are typically .5 microns in size.  The Point One filter is only slightly larger than a D size battery and weighs less than 6 ounces.  The filter exceeded our required flow rates by filtering 5 gallons of water in 20 minutes.  Along with a hose, this filter is attached to any size plastic bucket and uses gravity flow from the bucket to filter the water.  It is extremely easy to use (important when training primitive peoples in its use), easy to maintain and each filter is guaranteed to filter 1,000,000 gallons of water.  Over the last few years we have shipped hundreds of these filters to God’s people in 14 different countries around the world.  Each one is capable of providing 60 people per day with clean water and is guaranteed to last for years.  We have found the supplier (Sawyer Products) to be responsive and reliable in filling our orders and with the humanitarian aid discount available to us because of our 501(c)3 tax exempt status, our cost per filter is about $45 (including shipping)

As a result of God’s blessings upon this ministry, we have been able to give the gift of clean water to orphanages, clinics, schools and villages in Haiti, Honduras, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, China, Viet Nam, Korea, Thailand, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and Uganda.  My wife and I carried 50 of these filters in my backpack into a remote mountain village of Honduras and provided an entire village with a lifetime of clean water.  It takes so little to do so much when those we serve have nothing!  Our organization depends upon God to provide the means to purchase and distribute these life saving filters so if the King of the Universe moves you to get involved, we would love to hear from you.  A  hundred dollars worth of filters, you could save the life of every child you see in the pictures below.
